Chapter 19

I woke up Thursday morning to find Greta banging around in the kitchen.

“Good morning,” she said brightly. I wasn’t sure how long she’d been up, but judging by her appearance, it had been a while. She was dressed in running shorts and a racer-back tank top, and her long blonde hair was pulled into a sleek ponytail.

“Morning,” I mumbled, trying to infuse some enthusiasm into my voice.

I’d spent the better part of the late afternoon and evening hours of the previous day in her company, and I was not looking forward to immediately starting the morning with her.

Greta was busy opening and closing cupboards, peering inside each of them as she did so. I poured myself a cup of coffee, watching as she worked her way through the entire kitchen.

“Are you looking for something?” I finally asked.

“Just checking out the grocery situation,” she said. “I usually have a smoothie after my morning run but it looks like you don’t have most of the ingredients I normally use.”

“Like fruit?” I glanced at the bowl of apples and bananas on the counter. I knew for a fact that there were containers of strawberries and raspberries in the fridge, too. “And juice?”

“No. Spirulina. Nutritional yeast. Stuff like that.”

I didn’t have the foggiest idea what either of those ingredients were.

“That’s alright,” she told me. “I can make do this morning.”

I sat down with my coffee and Trixie trotted over to me for morning pets. She’d been lurking by Greta, probably hoping for some food to be tossed her way.

Greta plucked an apple from the fruit bowl and plopped down next to me. “So, what are we going to do today?”

I tried not to cringe. We?

“I have to walk Trixie,” I said, sipping my coffee. “And I have some clients that need walking.”

“That’s right. The dogs.” She nodded. “How long will that take you?”

Hours. All day, I thought.

“I’m not really sure,” I hedged. I’d checked my calendar before going to bed and knew that the day would be packed, especially because I’d canceled my walks from yesterday and rescheduled a couple of them for today. Some of my regulars had gone on vacation—people like Daniel, who owned Arrow and who I occasionally walked—which was keeping my commitments down, but things seemed to slowly be getting back to normal. “I need to go with Trixie now, and then go and pick up Duke because he usually goes with us on our morning walks. Then I need to swing by and walk Champion. And then Ozzie.”

Greta frowned. “Sounds like you’ll be busy most of the morning.”

I felt a tiny twinge of guilt.

“I was really hoping we could go exploring,” she said.

“Exploring?” It was an island, and a rather small one at that. I wasn’t sure there was much to explore besides the beaches, and considering we’d grown up on Sweetwater, it didn’t feel as though there was much unexplored territory. Besides, she’d traveled all over the world. What could she possibly find to do in Sweetwater?

“I’d love to go snorkeling.
